I've recently redesigned my European travel blog, Europe a la Carte. Not being very technie but wanting to do the job myself, I decided to use the preinstalled, free of charge Twenty Twelve Wordpress theme. I liked the clean layout of the theme.
To find the theme, log into your Wordpress blog. from the dashboard, scroll down the left hand sidebar to Appearance, Themes. You can have a good fiddle around customising the theme e.g. uploading a logo and background and do a live preview before you decide to make install the theme to your blog.
The big change I made was to have a static homepage versus the traditional blog home page which shows your latest posts in chronological order. On the static homepage there isn't the option of a sidebar but there are two widget aras which display below the page cotent into which you can place latest post, social media widgets etc.
I kept a sidebar on individual posts.
It's easy to decide to re-arrange the menu and choose which categories or pages you wish to display at the top of your blog.
I steered well clear of editing any css but found I could do a reasonable job with without it.
So if you're looking for for a free, easy to use Wordpress theme. Id' recommend Twenty Twelve.
